Asus Eee PC 901
Monday, September 29, 2008 @ 7:51:00 PM

As promised, here are the pictures of my newest gadget: an Asus Eee PC 901 with Windows XP.

I picked it up last saturday and at first I got a black one like I said in my previous post. This 901 however had a defective left mouse button so today I went back to the store to exchange it. In the short time that I had the black one in my possession I also discovered that it was a real fingerprint and dust magnet because of the glossy finish (it got dirty just by looking at it!) so I decided to exchange it for the white one.

At the moment my 901 is charging for it's first real use and in the meantime I will modify the site with the new Eee PC webcam page.

Eee PC coming!
Friday, September 26, 2008 @ 9:17:00 PM

Hey everybody! It's been about 2 weeks since I got back from my vacation to the USA (having a GREAT time btw) and I have finally decided which netbook I'm gonna buy. It will be the Asus Eee PC 901 XP black.

Why I chose this particular model? The 901 is the smallest netbook with a 8.9 inch screen at the moment and it has a 6-cell 6600 mAh battery which powers it up to about 8 hours! There's no other netbook on the market today with the same spectacular performance. The only drawback of the 901 XP version is the small hard drive capacity of 12GB but I will put in a larger HDD anyway.

At first I wanted the Linux version of the 901 because this model has a larger storage capacity of 20GB (for the same price as the XP version) but Asus decided not to release it in the Netherlands :( I even looked for the Linux version during my vacation in the States since it's for sale there but surprisingly it was more expensive then the 901 here (despite the low dollar). That's why I'm going with the XP version in the end.

I will pick it up tomorrow after work at the same electronic store I work at (with discount of course hehe) and will post some pictures as soon as possible.

New cam coming up!
Saturday, August 23, 2008 @ 11:17:00 PM

Some of you may have noticed it already, but Cam 2 (the bird house cam) has been offline for almost a month now. This is because my old 15 inch Dell notebook that broadcasted and powered the (infrared) webcam couldn't really stand being powered on for a continues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It got overheated several times and as a result shut itself down (did I already told you that it's REALLY old?). Because I don't want to break my notebook permanently I decided to stop broadcasting. Another reason why I'm not broadcasting this cam anymore is because there wasn't that much to see on the cam actually, only in the morning when birds in the neighborhood woke up there was some activity around the bird house but aside from that it was pretty dull :)

But... there are new exiting plans for Cam 2! When I get back from my USA vacation (read post below about that) I will purchase one of those cool new netbooks (if you don't know what a netbook is, it's an ultra-portable low-cost notebook). I don't know yet which one I will get (lots of choice) but it probably will be one of Asus's Eee PC's. The cool thing about the netbooks of Asus (called Eee PC's) is that they have a built-in webcam and very long battery life. Together with the built-in Wi-Fi and it's small dimensions/low weight it is the ultimate portable broadcasting device! I can easily take it anywhere I like and broadcast life from that location.

So there you have it... the new plans for Cam 2! Keep an eye out on the site, I will keep you guys informed about this.

Vacation booked! USA, here we come!
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 @ 6:04:00 PM

Today we booked our vacation... finally! Me (Randy) and a good friend will travel on the 29th of August to... New York! There we will stay till the 1st of September for a long weekend before we fly further to Orlando, Florida!! Yeah!! In Orlando all the big themeparks and touristic attractions await us and we will stay there for another two weeks. On the 15th of September we will fly home to boring Netherlands :).

My girlfriend Nous is going on vacation with her best friend, also to New York haha. She will stay there for 6 days. When they arrive in New York me and my friend will be in Orlando already so that's unfortunate but I'm sure the four of us will have a good time anyway in good ol' America :).

For Dutch people I can recommend American Estates with who we booked our USA vacations since 2003. They are specialized in trips to the USA and I've always been very satisfied with them. No matter what you want with your trip to the USA, they can arrange it for you (or will do their best) and their prices are fair too.

Randy turns 30
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 @ 3:25:00 PM

Today is my birthday and I reached the feared 30!! Farewell youth, my teenage years are definitely over now :)

I remember when I turned 20 as if it was yesterday *sigh*, time sure flies by at ridiculous speed. Luckily I still feel like 20 and more important: I still look like a 20 year old too :D :D

Bird house cam online
Sunday, June 01, 2008 @ 8:42:00 PM

Since our budgie nest box cam is offline (nesting season is over) cam 2 wasn't used anymore. Untill now, because we have a new purpose for it. Cam 2 is now being used as bird house cam! :)

Outside on our balcony we have a bird house with food in it for the birds. On certain times it's very crowded with all kind of birds (even crows are attracted by the food although they are too big for the bird house) and we thought it would be fun to point a webcam at it.

Just like the budgie nest box cam the bird house cam will be online 24/7 (as long as the laptop doesn't crash :)).

Budgie cam
Sunday, April 27, 2008 @ 9:34:00 PM

Today we decided to stop with the infrared budgie cam that was online 24/7 for the last couple of weeks. We checked the two eggs of our female budgie Boots today and they where both empty. Since this was her second nest this spring/summer she won't have a nest again until next year so we removed her nest box and put her together again with the other budgies.

It's to bad none of her eggs hatched this time, we would have loved to see how she took care of her babies and how they grew up in the nest box. Maybe we have more luck next year. I can tell you that when she begins nesting again the budgie cam will be back!

Chat works and radio station news
Sunday, April 06, 2008 @ 8:51:00 PM

I discovered why the chat wasn't working for me and got it working now so I'll see you in there! :)

Because of the new streaming webcams I have stopped the radio station output because of the fact that it's controls don't work in FireFox. This means that you couldn't stop the music in FireFox which would interfere with the streaming audio of the webcams. I will have to see yet what I will do with it.

New webcams and chatroom online!
@ 3:53:00 PM

Some of you that took a look at the website this morning already saw that the new webcam software is being used of which I told about in my last post. Thanks to Ustream.tv both webcams stream real video and audio now. There is also a new chatroom but at the time it's not working for me (I get a security error) so you'll have to excuse me if I'm not in it. It has something to do with my computer and the way it uses Java and/or Flash (something that I installed because the chat is working fine on my laptop). I'm looking into this problem as we speak so I hope it's solved soon.

Cam 2 is now being used as nest box cam of our budgies that will be online 24 hours, 7 days a week. In my last post I told about modifying a webcam of ours and using infrared LEDS with it. I got the LEDS this week, drilled a hole in the nest box of our budgie "Boots" and installed the webcam and infrared LEDS. You can see the result in the webcams section of the site. Let's hope Boots will have some eggs soon and we will get some cute baby birds in a few weeks :)

Webcam news!
Saturday, March 15, 2008 @ 6:21:00 PM

It's been a while but I'm finally updating the site bit by bit. Many things are going to change (visible and invisible) so I will do this in steps. First thing that is going to change very soon is the most important part of the site: the webcams!

At this very moment I'm experimenting with different webcam software of which one will replace the software that I'm using now for over 7 years. Webcam32 is very good webcam software but was always a little buggy and quite outdated now so it's time to move on. The new software will have better streaming capabilities and will be easier for me to handle so I have better control over it's functions. Streaming audio will also be possible in the very near future because of this.

Other webcam news is that I modified the Creative NX Ultra webcam to allow infrared light to enter it's CCD chip. Because of this it's also more light sensitive now, which is a good thing. At the moment this webcam is being used as Cam 2 and when you look at it you will notice that some of the colors are WAY off. This is quite entertaining because certain dark things will appear light and Anouschka's hair color for example turns blue! :D This is due to the fact that this webcam also picks up infrared light now, something we can't see with our eyes but is always around us. The reason I did this is because our birds (budgies) are having eggs again. I'm going to mount this webcam in one of the nesting cabins together with some infrared LED's (that are already ordered) so we can always see what happens in there without bothering the birds. It should be cool to see when the first new baby birds are born :)

Wii got it!!
Friday, February 29, 2008 @ 9:06:00 PM

Finally after two months of waiting my Nintendo Wii arrived! In the Netherlands it's sold out everywhere and the only way to get one (eventually) is to reserve it somewhere. That's what I did two month's ago and today it finally came in at the shop where I ordered it. All I can say is that it was worth the wait, the Wii is a great and fun console!

My Wii code is: 6931 4531 1685 8082.
If you want to add me to your Wii send me an e-mail so that I can add you too.

Holiday decorations
Sunday, December 02, 2007 @ 1:14:00 PM

Because of the upcoming holidays I added some X-mas decoration to the site.

Note: the snow effect works best with a resolution of 1152x864 pixels or higher. Also, it doesn't work with FireFox :(

Another year through the drain
Monday, July 09, 2007 @ 5:29:00 PM

Today is my birthday, I turned 29. From my girlfriend and family in law I got a bicycle because I always take my car when I need to go somewhere, even if it's only 5 minutes from here. My own parents will arrive within a hour and I don't know what I will get from them so that will be a surprise.
